Matrin was born and raised in Chicago. His father, Roland worked as a forensics examiner, and his mother, Dorothea earned a living cleaning up after crime scenes, usually with young Matrin in tow. The three of them made a happy, if bizarre home.
Early Days of SPONGE |
One night Matrin's father showed up to investigate a crime still in progress, and was killed in the line of duty. Dorothea packed their belongings into a station wagon, and she and a thirteen year old Matrin moved to Massachusetts.
Matrin went to high school in Boston, spending most of his time reading books of science. At school, he was beaten by other kids for being "too intellectual". At home, he was beaten by the son of his mother's new husband for being "a smartass bastard". Matrin ignored it all, taking solace in his studies. |
| Earning a scholarship, Matrin left home to attend Miskatonic University. It was there that he met Dr. Bustoffson, one of his teachers. Bustoffson quickly saw in Matrin someone that might be able to grasp the horrors of reality. He enlisted the aid of his student, and together they encountered things that would send normal men home to their mothers, weeping.
Matrin agreed to help Bustoffson form a group that would investigate occurances of the occult. It was during this time that he met Uta Michelovich, a foreign exchange student. They were soon married.
Despite absences due to injury, death, and academia, Matrin has tirelessly assisted SPONGE in its ongoing investigations, and has vowed to see things through to the bitter end, as many times as it takes.
